openai's distribution became anthropic's advantage
it's fascinating that openai's 900m consumer distribution became a deep prior that shaped what they optimized for which was engagement, breadth, & the chatgpt as companion vibe.
anthropic, without that gravitational pull, could ask the boring capitalist question which is simple... where does a token actually clear its cost of production?
& the answer was code, agents, & knowledge work where a seat is worth $200/mo & enterprises pay for reliability over charm. coding in particular is the ideal beachhead cuz it's verifiable, high willingness to pay, & compounds into agentic workflows (which is where the real margin lives downstream).
interesting lesson where sometimes your obvious advantages kinda turn into baggage for the long term. i am not saying this is bad for openai but every enterprise right now has two words on their mind: "claude code".
